STEP Members Begin Next Round of Data Collection: Qualitative Case Studies

August 21, 2019

In July, with the completion of the 2019 STEP global survey data collected from over 1800 business families, STEP Project researchers began their deep analysis of the data. It is an exciting time for our STEP members and their entrepreneurial business families as new and exciting developments and trends emerge from the data (see STEP Survey Benchmarking Report) with a full Global Report due out in the fall of 2019.

Simultaneously, STEP teams have also begun their next round of data collection with qualitative case studies.  The premise of the qualitative case studies complements the 2019 STEP survey data.  The overarching aim of the case studies is to explore impacts of changing demographics on succession and firm performance. This collection of qualitative data will explore how family businesses are dealing with this issue and what practice in succession and governance looks like in the modern era.  The STEP teams will research the following issues:

  1. Differences in generational outlook
  2. Retirement planning
  3. Gender and societal change
  4. Unexpected succession

STEP members will follow the 2019 STEP Case Guidelines (available in the STEP portal for STEP members).  The STEP qualitative case studies are due February 15, 2020.

Our new STEP Case Research Champion, Georges Samara has begun analyzing the 2020 cases, and will develop, with the Case committee, the methodology and Case Report.  The final Case Report will be completed in June 2020.
